Some photos from Finals Day

The Stewartry Championship Finals were played today at Kirkcudbright Bowling Club. Stewartry President Frank Johnstone welcomed a good crowed who enjoyed some excellent bowling. The day started at 10.00 am with the mixed pairs between Morag Lamb and Martin McClymont from Creetown and Jean McCartney and John Crawford from Kirkcudbright. Morag & Martin got of to a good start and Jean & John tried hard but could never quite catch up. The final score was 14 - 12. At 12.30 we had the Junior and Senior Singles and the Pairs. The pairs was an super game to watch, with Martin McClymont playing in his second game, leading for Alistair Herries they found the home pair of William True and Brian McClune too hot to handle. This game was very close until the last 4 ends and demonstrated the very best of bowling and made the Stewartry Selectors hope that the Kirkcudbright pair will be available for next years Hamilton Trophy. The Final score was 15 - 7. The Senior Singles was again  a display of the talent of Keith Shuttleworth from New Abbey. Steven Richardson from Castle Douglas tried hard but found the rink hard to handle and on ends where he was in a good position Keith had some big bowls in his locker, like second end Steven lies 3 shots - Keith burnt end ! Final score 21 - 11 to Keith. The Junior Singles produced some high drama.  Alan Davies from Castle Douglas playing in his 5th Juniors Final looked certian to win the title for the first time when he raced to a 9 - 0 lead over home club Steven Johnstone but Steven fought back and the game evetually ended up at 20 - 20 and Alan Davies produced a  inch perfect draw with his last bowl to win the title. The final 3 games of the day stated about 2.30pm with the weather having improved and showing Kirkcudbright Bowling Club at it's very best. Stewartry President Frank Johnstone and his Senior rink of Stanley Kerr, Jackie Patterson and Jim Fleming were trying to win the Seniors title for the second year but found the opposition from Dalbeattie to strong, Bruce Richardson ( he let Joe navigate  to Kirkcudbright) Joe McCall, Rooker and Tommy Feenan were in good form and won 15 - 9. The Fours was tight the first few ends then Sharkey scored 3,3,6 virtually finishing the game  going 16 4 up there was a minor fightback from Creetown but CD boys were well in control, although Flash looked as if he was unlucky a few times. Final score 22 - 8. Triples was a decent match never much in it between 2 evenly matched teams then the Greens went ahead  opening up a 5 shot gap at 12 7 after 12 ends a 1,2 finish from the Shuttleworths made it 2 of diff on the last, New Abbey lay 3 when Neil Shutleworth was a bit heavy and gave the shot away virtually finishing the game

Thanks to Kirkcudbright Bowling Club and President Margaret Fleming and her helpers for their hospitality, Umpires William Thomson and Peter Millwain.
